Summary
  • SDP's Anita Bonačić Obradović presented analyses showing arsenic four times above the allowed limit at Grabovica.
  • She accused Mayor Franković of hiding the findings from the public for three years.
  • She is demanding the publication of nine years of monitoring and a PFAS analysis at Grabovica, Ombla, and the Komolac treatment plant.
  • She emphasized that she is not claiming the water is unhealthy, but that citizens must know what they are drinking.

On Wednesday, Anita Bonačić Obradović, who heads the Dubrovnik SDP, sent a request to the City of Dubrovnik and the municipal company Čistoća to publicly release the complete groundwater monitoring at the Grabovica site, covering the last nine years. She warned of findings showing elevated levels of pollutants, presenting analytical reports from the accredited laboratory Eurofins from 2023 and 2024.

"Today I will show the analytical report from Eurofins, commissioned by the city company Čistoća, from 2023 and 2024, which I received anonymously, but I want the public to be aware of the data. These are not my data, but analytical reports from an accredited laboratory," said Bonačić Obradović.

Arsenic Four Times Above the Allowed Limit

According to the presented findings, arsenic was recorded at four times the permitted amount. "Nickel was also found, which should not be there at all. There was also 400 times the allowed amount of organic pollution," Bonačić Obradović emphasized.

She added that the water was tested at a depth of 193 meters and was described in the analysis as "a very turbid liquid, dark brown in color, with a noticeable odor." She also reminded that tracing established a connection between the landfill and the source of the Ombla River, which supplies Dubrovnik with water.

Accusations Against the Mayor

Bonačić Obradović directly accused Mayor Franković of hiding the findings from the public. "Franković has apparently been hiding these findings from the public for three years. I am not claiming that the water we drink is unhealthy. I have no proof of that, but we must know what kind of water we are drinking," said the SDP city councilor.

She also requested that an analysis of PFAS, the so-called forever chemicals, be conducted and published at three key points: at the Grabovica landfill, at the source of the Ombla River, and at the water treatment plant in Komolac.

Questions About the Treatment Plant and Grabovica's Capacity

"Has the second phase of the water treatment plant been implemented with ultrafiltration and activated carbon, which can help in case of the appearance of 'forever chemicals'? If so, when? Or, if not, why not?" asked Bonačić Obradović, adding that she is requesting the publication of the complete groundwater monitoring at Grabovica over the last nine years.

She reminded that Mayor Franković has announced the closure of Grabovica on several occasions, but it has not yet happened. "What is the current capacity of Grabovica? Will it be full by the end of the year, and where will Dubrovnik's waste go after that? Citizens deserve answers to all these questions," concluded the president of the Dubrovnik SDP.
