Summary
  • SDP announces it will initiate a no-confidence motion against the Government over illegal hazardous waste disposal in Gospić.
  • SDP President Hajdaš Dončić claims this is evidence of a systemic lack of political accountability, not an isolated failure.
  • A vote of confidence is sought in Parliament, and the Prime Minister is urged to attend the extraordinary session of the Environment Committee in Gospić this Friday.

SDP President Siniša Hajdaš Dončić announced on Monday, August 10, 2026, that his party would initiate a no-confidence motion against the Government. He cited the case of illegal hazardous waste disposal in Gospić as the key trigger, stating that it is the moment the cup overflowed.

"Gospić is the moment the cup overflowed. That is why I call on all political actors in Croatia, regardless of political ideology or party worldview, not to divide over this. Because this is not about left or right. It is about whether the same rule will apply to everyone in Croatia: that those politically responsible for the functioning of the system must answer for it," Hajdaš Dončić said via his Facebook page.

Not an isolated failure, but a way of governing

The opposition leader emphasized that the issue goes beyond a single isolated incident. He argued that it reflects a systemic approach to governing the state in which political accountability is absent. He reminded that the current Government has replaced more than thirty ministers during its term, but accountability has never been fully pursued.

"We are no longer talking about individual failures. We are talking about a way of governing the state. About a Government that has replaced more than thirty ministers during its term, yet political accountability has never been brought to its conclusion," Hajdaš Dončić said.

Call for a vote of confidence and an extraordinary session in Gospić

The SDP President insists that the vote of confidence in the Government be debated in the Croatian Parliament so that every MP takes responsibility for their vote. "The SDP will stand on the side of accountability, on the side of citizens, and on the side of a Croatia that deserves better. Therefore, we will do everything to ensure that the confidence in this Government is debated in the Croatian Parliament and that every MP takes responsibility for their vote," he said.

He made a special appeal ahead of the extraordinary session of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Nature Protection, which its chairperson Dušica Radojčić from the Možemo! party has convened for this Friday in Gospić. Hajdaš Dončić called on all parties and MPs to attend the session and posed direct questions to the Prime Minister and the responsible ministers.

"And will the Prime Minister and all responsible ministers have the courage to come? They should. To answer simple questions before the citizens of Gospić, the Croatian Parliament, and the Croatian public - Who failed? Who is responsible? Why didn't institutions react in time? Who will pay for the remediation?" Hajdaš Dončić wrote.
