Two Slovak tourists, a 38-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, ended up in the detention unit of the Istrian Police Department instead of returning home after their vacation. The Umag police completed a criminal investigation in which they are suspected of stealing an electric bicycle in Novigrad.
According to the findings of the investigation, the suspects allegedly stole an electric bicycle owned by a 47-year-old man in front of a shop in Novigrad on August 11, 2026, at around 7 PM. After conducting police measures and actions, the Umag police established reasonable suspicion that they had committed the criminal offense of theft.
Four days after the theft, on August 15, 2026, at around 11 PM, the duo was stopped at the old Kaštel border crossing as they were leaving Croatia. They were arrested and, along with a criminal report, were handed over to the detention unit of the Istrian Police Department on August 16 in the evening hours.
During the procedure, the 38-year-old insulted police officers, for which he will also face a misdemeanor report under the Law on Misdemeanors against Public Order and Peace. The Istrian police announced the case on August 17, 2026.
