Hrvatske autoceste are phasing out the long-standing payment system used by drivers on motorways previously operated by Autocesta Rijeka, Zagreb. The remaining amount can be transferred to an ENC device or a refund can be requested.
Hrvatske autoceste (HAC) have confirmed that the SMART toll payment system will be completely discontinued on October 1, 2026, meaning drivers who still keep these cards in their glove compartments have less than two months to use up their remaining balance.
The phase-out process began on July 1, 2026, when further top-ups of SMART cards were disabled. However, any funds already on the cards can still be used without any obstacles to pay tolls, until September 30, 2026, the last day for regular use of the remaining balance.
HAC has offered users with unspent funds two clear options. The first, intended for those who wish to continue with electronic toll collection, is to transfer the money from an existing SMART prepaid account to an ENC prepaid account, with the possibility of exchanging their card for an ENC device at Hrvatske autoceste sales offices.
The second option is to close the SMART prepaid account and receive a payout of the available amount, with the request submitted via email or in person at any HAC sales office.
The SMART system dominated for years on the sections once operated by Autocesta Rijeka, Zagreb, so it's no surprise that many cards are still in vehicles, even if they are only used occasionally. It is precisely these drivers that HAC is urging to be extra careful so their money doesn't go to waste.
The discontinuation of SMART cards is just one step in a broader shift toward fully electronic toll collection and system modernization, and for the user, the whole story boils down to a simple check of the account balance and a timely decision, transfer the funds to ENC or withdraw them.
