Croatia is set for an exceptionally dynamic weather day today, August 8, 2026, bringing two contrasting faces of summer. While a strong bura wind will hit the northern Adriatic, Dalmatia and the far south of the country will continue to bake under extreme heat, prompting the highest level of weather alert.
The northern Adriatic will be dominated by wind today. A moderate to strong bura will blow, with gusts reaching storm force at the foot of Velebit. Drivers are advised to exercise extra caution on roads near the mountain range. Alongside the windy conditions, the western part of the country will see partly sunny skies, but the afternoon brings instability. Locally stronger cloud development could result in a few showers in Istria and Gorski Kotar.
Overnight and morning temperatures brought slight relief, especially in the mountains, where around 16°C was recorded. In the Istrian interior, temperatures ranged from 19 to 22°C, while in the northern Adriatic, some places saw up to 28°C. During the day, maximum temperatures in this area will mostly range between 27 and 32°C, but in some spots, the mercury could climb to 34°C. As a result, a heatwave warning remains in effect.
A far more challenging situation is expected in Dalmatia. Due to the very high risk of heat-related health issues, a red alert has been issued for this region. Daytime air temperatures will reach up to 37°C in some places.
Although the day will be mostly sunny, cloud development inland could bring local showers with thunderstorms in the afternoon, which may even reach the coast. The wind will be light, with a moderate bura in northern Dalmatia, temporarily turning to a northwesterly and southwesterly breeze around midday. The sea will remain calm or only slightly choppy.
The south of Croatia will not be spared from extreme heat. The streak of exceptionally warm nights and hot days continues, with maximum daytime temperatures ranging from 35 to 38°C. The weather will be similarly calm and not overly windy.
Despite plenty of sunshine, there is a chance of afternoon showers later in the day. These are most likely in the wider Konavle area. Residents and tourists are advised to be cautious, avoid direct sun exposure during the hottest part of the day, and regularly check traffic information due to the strong wind under Velebit.
