Disturbing footage from the island of Vir shows a young driver violating traffic rules and ultimately hitting a passerby, while the reader who provided the material appeals for stricter controls and parental responsibility.
Highly disturbing footage of a dangerous e-scooter ride on Vir has surfaced on social media. The video, initially posted on TikTok and then shared in the Facebook group "Ljubitelji otoka Vira" (Lovers of the island of Vir), was provided to the Morski HR portal by an outraged reader.
According to him, this is "yet another sweet child" who turned one of the busiest streets on Vir into their own playground for gaining attention on social media.
The incident occurred on Borisa Krnčevića Street, heading towards the intersection with Virski put and Stari put streets. The young driver was traveling on an electric scooter at a speed estimated to exceed 50 km/h. The footage clearly documents a series of serious traffic violations: slaloming between moving cars, overtaking vehicles on both the left and right sides of the road, and blatantly crossing a solid center line.
The reckless ride culminated in a dramatic moment when the young man, at full speed, crashed into a pedestrian. The impact is clearly audible and visible in the video, and the video's author further demonstrated a lack of civility by hurling a barrage of curses and vulgarities at the bystanders.
"Yet another sweet child filming their 'responsible' behavior in traffic for social media... They overtake cars, speed over 50 km/h, eventually crash into a pedestrian, and their vocabulary is 'impeccable'," cynically and indignantly commented the reader who provided the material to Morski HR.
This incident on Vir is, unfortunately, not an isolated case but part of a grim trend sweeping Croatian roads. In his letter, the reader reminded of the recent tragedy near Velika Gorica, where another child lost their life while riding an electric scooter. He therefore issued a strong appeal to the general public.
"I ask that you, as a respected media outlet, share this video with the public and issue a public criticism and appeal to all e-scooter riders to be mindful of what they do and how they operate these personal mobility devices. A special appeal goes to children, but also to their parents who buy them and allow them to operate such devices without any supervision!" he urged.
Reckless e-scooter riding on Vir has become a daily occurrence that endangers tourists, local residents, and most of all the children riding them. Therefore, citizens are justifiably demanding an immediate response from the authorities.
"I also ask that you appeal to the police to more strictly control e-scooter riders on our island, because this is definitely not an isolated case!" concluded the reader in his letter to Morski HR.
The Road Traffic Safety Act classifies electric scooters as personal mobility devices, for which clear rules apply. These include mandatory helmet use for those under 16, a ban on riding with headphones in both ears, and riding exclusively on bicycle lanes or, if none are available, on the sidewalk at an adjusted speed. It is time for these rules to be rigorously enforced on Vir before it's too late.
