A Zadar woman who rents out an apartment on Puntamika reported the case to warn the public about dishonest drivers who cheat foreign guests.
A young couple from Germany had an unpleasant experience upon arriving in Zadar when a taxi driver, claiming he misunderstood them, took them to Bibinje instead of Borik and tried to charge them 300 euros for the ride. The case was reported to Antena Zadar by the owner of the apartment on Puntamika where the tourists were staying.
According to the Zadar woman's account, the guests arrived in Zadar by bus from Zagreb and took a taxi at the bus station. They explained in English where they needed to go, having previously checked the route on Google and shown it to him, including the photo and address of the apartment located right next to the hotel on Puntamika.
Although it is a very well-known address, after about twenty minutes of driving, the taxi driver turned in the wrong direction. The girl spotted a sign reading "Bibinje" on the right side and suspected something was wrong, after which they asked the driver where he was taking them, as it was clear they were not heading toward Borik.
The driver, according to the apartment owner's story, got confused and said in broken English that he had made a mistake and had headed toward Bibinje instead of Borik. When they finally arrived at their destination on Puntamika, known to tourists as Borik, the taxi driver demanded 300 euros.
The young man and woman were shocked and refused to pay. The apartment owner, who fortunately was waiting for them in front of the house, told the taxi driver she would call the police. At that, he got scared and said it was "a communication error" and that they needed to pay 100 euros.
Although even that amount seemed too high, the tourists, exhausted from the journey, agreed to pay just to end the ordeal.
"I want people to know what some taxi drivers are doing, and that's why I called you. This is a disgrace, ripping off guests like this! What kind of image have we left them with, and why would they ever come back to Zadar when this is what happens to them?!"
said the Zadar woman for Antena Zadar, asking that the story be published so that similar situations do not happen again.
This is a recurring problem year after year, which inspections have been trying to put an end to for a long time. Some drivers have lost their taxi licenses because of such cases, and tourists are advised to prepare well, familiarize themselves with their destinations, and know the current prices.
