Before the Princess of Wales revealed her cancer diagnosis, a wild story about an alleged pregnancy with the late husband of Lady Gabrielle Windsor spread across social media.
When Kate Middleton disappeared from public view in early 2024 due to illness, and the palace remained silent about her condition, numerous conspiracy theories began to circulate online. Some were so absurd they had no basis in reality, but one particularly shocked the public and, according to Story.hr, sent Prince William into a frenzy.
Before the public learned that Kate had cancer and had started preventive chemotherapy, a video went viral claiming that the Princess of Wales was expecting a child with Thomas Kingston. Kingston had recently been found dead in Gloucestershire, and he was the husband of Lady Gabrielle Windsor.
On TikTok, it was claimed that he was allegedly Pippa Middleton's ex-boyfriend, Kate's sister, and that after their breakup, he remained in constant contact with Kate. His tragic death only gave further momentum to conspiracy theorists who linked the two stories into one sensationalist narrative.
While some were convinced this theory made sense, others argued that in such situations it is inappropriate to let one's imagination run wild and make such claims about real people going through a difficult time. Communications advisors suggested to the royal family that it was necessary to respond and finally clarify the situation with Kate.
The royal family did just that at the end of March 2024. Kate released a video in which she said that cancer had been found and that it took her time to accept it, but also that she had appropriately communicated it to her children, George, Charlotte, and Louis. During this challenging period, her husband William provided her with strong support.
Interestingly, Lady Gabrielle Windsor, the wife of the late Kingston, was herself at the center of a major scandal a few years ago. It all happened in 2017, when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement. At a pre-Christmas lunch organized by the British court to introduce the family to the Duchess of Sussex, the Princess of Kent appeared wearing a controversial brooch.
That brooch is known as a 'blackamoor,' which depicts Africans, and this jewelry represents an obsession with slavery and captivity. Since Meghan is of African-American descent, many interpreted this move by the princess as a direct insult to Harry's fiancée.
Kate and William were, according to Story.hr, devastated by Thomas's death and were a great support to his wife. Prince William attended the final farewell, but Kate did not. Now it is clear why, because she had a cancer diagnosis that was not known to the public, and she was not yet ready to reveal that information to everyone.
In the meantime, Kate has stated that her cancer is in remission and she was slowly returning to her royal duties.
