The second season of 'Shadows over the Balkans' is set in the tense year of 1934, just before the assassination of King Alexander I of Yugoslavia in Marseille. The plot begins with a failed assassination attempt on the king in Zagreb, then moves to Avala, where a brutal, ritualistic murder occurs. The story is accompanied by political chaos, heroin smuggling, and the activities of mysterious societies.
The cast is what sets 'Shadows over the Balkans' apart from other projects. Dragan Bjelogrlić portrays Inspector Andra Tanasijević Tane, who no longer respects any rules and operates completely independently. Andrija Kuzmanović plays Inspector Stanko Pletikosić, a broken man struggling with his own demons and alcoholism.
In the new season, the focus shifts to the rise of the Montenegrin mafia and the struggle for control over the lucrative heroin market. At the same time, Nazi and Stalinist forces are strengthening, while mystical occult societies pull the strings of the Balkans' fate from the shadows.
Audiences in Croatia particularly praise Goran Bogdan, who masterfully portrays the communist agent and dangerous operative Mustafa Golubić. Alongside him, Leon Paraminski plays Marija Oršić, an enigmatic woman connected to dark occult circles.
The ensemble is further bolstered by Vesna Trivalić, whose role as Draginja earned her the prestigious Golden Antenna award, as well as Bogdan Diklić, Marija Bergam, and young Marko Grabež.
The series was named best at the FEDIS TV Drama and Series Festival, and the reasons are clear: complex parallel storylines, authentic 1930s set design, spectacular action scenes, and lavish cinematography. 'Shadows over the Balkans' is not just a gripping thriller but also a powerful chronicle of a pivotal historical moment whose repercussions are still felt today.
