On County Road ŽC 5047, on the section between Vela Učka and Veprinac, a serious traffic accident occurred on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 4:50 PM, in which a 19-year-old motorcyclist, a German national, lost his life. While riding a motorcycle with German license plates from the direction of Vela Učka toward Veprinac, the young man failed to adjust his speed to the road conditions, lost control, and fell.
He entered the lane designated for oncoming traffic, where he collided with a car registered in Rijeka. The car was driven by a 40-year-old Croatian national, and a 47-year-old female passenger was also in the vehicle. The 19-year-old died at the scene from his injuries, and his body was transported to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Criminology at the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka for an autopsy.
Road Closed and Extraordinary Technical Inspection
Due to the investigation, the section of County Road 5047 was closed to all traffic from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The criminal investigation established that the deceased young man was part of a group of enduro motorcycle riders traveling together along that section.
The motorcycles belonging to the group members were temporarily seized and subsequently sent for additional technical inspection. Dangerous technical defects were found on them. The riders were fined for the offenses they committed and had to pay a fine of 660 euros.
Appeal for Technical Roadworthiness
This tragic event once again highlights the importance of the technical roadworthiness of enduro motorcycles participating in traffic on public roads. It is crucial that motorcycles, regardless of type or purpose, must meet all technical standards before being used on public roads.
