The American president announced a significant reduction in joint maneuvers, citing a good relationship with Kim Jong Un and high costs for the U.S.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday evening on his social media platform Truth Social that the United States will significantly reduce joint military exercises with South Korea. He cited their high costs and his, as he described it, very good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as reasons, according to BBC.
"These exercises are not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!), but send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile," Trump wrote on Truth Social. The announcement came just moments before U.S. and South Korean forces were set to begin their regular exercises, scheduled to start on Monday, August 17, 2026.
In his post, Trump highlighted his "very good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Their last in-person meeting took place in 2019, and those meetings drew significant international attention but did not lead to a final agreement on North Korea's nuclear program.
For years, joint military exercises have been a key element of defense cooperation between Washington and Seoul, while Pyongyang regularly calls them a threat. Therefore, Trump's announcement comes at a delicate moment, although specific details about how large the reduction might be have not yet been released.
In the same post, the American president also mentioned South Korea's recent decision not to join the United States in efforts related to the denuclearization of Iran. Trump wrote that South Korea declined the invitation to join the "Denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran." According to Stijena.info, he did not provide a detailed explanation of how this issue relates to military exercises on the Korean Peninsula, but he mentioned it in the context of justifying his new decision.
Trump, according to Disclose.tv, has tasked the Secretary of Defense to "substantially reduce the Joint Military Exercises." From Trump's post, it is not yet clear which activities will be canceled, shortened, or reduced. It is also unknown whether this decision is long-term or applies only to the upcoming cycle of exercises. The U.S. administration, the Pentagon, and South Korean authorities are expected to provide additional information.
Trump announced the decision at the last minute, given that regular military exercises with South Korea are set to begin on Monday. These exercises aim to practice coordination between the two militaries and test their operational readiness. Any significant change in the schedule could have practical consequences, but the actual scope will not be known until the relevant institutions release an official plan.
Trump's message simultaneously indicates that issues of cost, regional security, and the relationship with Kim Jong Un are once again converging into a single political debate. Washington and Seoul must now align their next moves, while Pyongyang will carefully watch whether the announced reduction is presented as a temporary measure or as the beginning of a broader shift in U.S. policy toward the region.
