Only 33 percent of Americans approve of President Donald Trump's performance in the White House, while 64 percent disapprove, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Monday, August 17, 2026. This marks a decrease from the 35% support seen in a poll completed earlier in the month, and it is the lowest percentage during his current term. At the same time, it also matches his weakest showing from his first term as president, which was recorded in December 2017.

Trump returned to the White House with support just below 50%, but his popularity has declined this year after he ordered strikes on Iran, alongside U.S. ally Israel. The conflict has halted roughly a fifth of global oil trade, driving up fuel prices and adding strain on American households. This also poses a challenge for Republicans who are seeking to maintain control of Congress in November 2026.

During the campaign, Trump promised to fight inflation and avoid lengthy wars. Initially, he stated that the conflict with Iran would last only a few weeks and that military action was the only way to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons. Trump also emphasized that war was the sole means to stop Iran from developing nuclear arms that could threaten the world.

As Many as 80 Percent of Americans Expect a Long War

However, the poll shows that Americans are increasingly skeptical of such a scenario. As many as 80% of respondents believe that U.S. involvement in the conflict with Iran will last an extended period. This view is shared by 87% of Democrats and 71% of Republicans. Only 16% of respondents think the conflict could end within a few weeks.

Despite pressure and attacks, Iran has managed to keep a large portion of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz blocked, although the intensity of the conflict has decreased in recent weeks. Reuters also reported on social media platform X that Iran is signaling it will escalate if the U.S. does not honor the agreement within a few weeks. Iran has proven resilient and has largely blocked oil trade through the Strait of Hormuz, even after the conflict has calmed down.

The poll conducted by Reuters and Ipsos was carried out online with a sample of 1,166 American adults, with a margin of error of three percentage points.
