After 33-year-old Matija Gereci was killed in a traffic accident in Laz Bistrički, all of Zagorje has been plunged into mourning. Death found him in his native region, and the news has caused deep sorrow among friends, colleagues, and members of the firefighting and motorsport scenes.
Passionate about cars and firefighting
Gereci was a member of the Voluntary Fire Department Laz and the Croatian Auto and Karting Federation (HAKS). As a car mechanic by profession, he gladly shared his skills within the Laz VFD. He regularly participated in servicing and repairing firefighting vehicles and equipment, and was always available whenever needed. In addition, he was passionate about cars and regularly competed in racing events.
Emotional farewells from colleagues
HAKS bid Matija a heartfelt farewell. "With great sadness and disbelief, we received the news of the tragic death of our athlete Matija Gereci, who lost his life prematurely and unfortunately. Matija was part of our motorsport family, and through his sporting enthusiasm, love for motorsport, and presence at competitions, he left a mark among all who knew him", HAKS stated, as reported by Studentski.hr.
They added that in these difficult moments, they extend their deepest condolences to his family, friends, sports colleagues, and all who knew him. "Rest in peace, Matija. You will forever remain part of our motorsport family", they concluded.
His colleagues from the Laz VFD are also saying goodbye to Matija. Commander Damir Joć sent him a particularly emotional message: "My dear Mata, one locker in the VFD will forever remain empty. Rest in peace and, with Saint Florian, watch over us."
