Summary
  • The waste disposal investigation could be completed by the end of September 2026.
  • Turudić declined to comment on opposition hysteria or the posts of suspect Josip Šincek.
  • Analyses for landfills in Benkovac and Varaždin are not yet completed.
  • In the case of the fire near Omiš, terrorism has not been ruled out.

The investigation into illegal waste disposal could be completed by the end of September, after which the State Attorney's Office would decide on a potential indictment. This was stated on Monday, August 17, 2026, by Chief State Attorney Ivan Turudić, ahead of a session of the Croatian Parliament's Committee on Environmental Protection and Nature in Gospić.

"The investigation is still ongoing. As soon as it is completed, we will make a decision from the State Attorney's Office. That could be around the end of September," Turudić said.

Expansion of Investigation and Stance on Penalties

When asked by journalists about the possibility of expanding the investigation, Turudić responded that this option always exists. He also commented on proposals to legally tighten penalties, saying he is not opposed to them, but expressed doubt that this would truly solve the problem.

"This has become a trend now-whenever a problem arises, we tighten penalties," Turudić stated.

Declined to Comment on Hysteria and Šincek's Posts

When asked whether he believes the opposition is being hysterical about the entire case, the Chief State Attorney did not want to engage in the discussion. "That's not my job," he said briefly.

He also left without comment the posts of the main suspect in the waste disposal case, Josip Šincek, who has opened social media pages to present his version of events to the public.

Analyses for Benkovac and Varaždin Not Yet Completed

Turudić announced that the State Attorney's Office will also publish analyses for other waste disposal sites, including those in Benkovac and Varaždin, but added that these documents are not yet finished. He also noted that waste has not been brought to the disputed location in Gospić for "well over a year."

Fires in Dalmatia: Terrorism Not Excluded

Commenting on recent fires in Dalmatia, particularly the one near Omiš, Turudić said it is too early to discuss results because the investigation is still ongoing and it remains to be seen where it will lead.

When directly asked whether there are elements suggesting terrorism, he responded that this possibility always exists and cannot be ruled out. He reminded that the law recognizes the criminal offense of causing a fire for the purpose of terrorism. "Now we will determine whether there were motives for this and whether the perpetrators acted with such motives," Turudić concluded.
