Police officers from the anti-explosive protection unit in the Vinkovci area have seized an impressive amount of weapons and mine-explosive devices from the field in just a month and a half. According to data from the Vukovar-Srijem Police Department, between June 29 and August 13, 2026, they received 18 reports of voluntary surrender and 34 reports of finding weapons and explosives.
In total, from 52 locations, they safely seized 40 hand grenades, 10 mines, 200 detonator caps, one hand-held rocket launcher known as a 'zolja', 10 meters of slow-burning fuse, one mortar grenade stabilizer, and 5.1 kilograms of various explosives.
In addition to explosive devices, the police also took possession of firearms. Among the seized items were two rifles, three automatic rifles, 37 magazines for automatic rifles, one homemade pistol known as 'Penkalo', two homemade single-shot pistols, three pistols, two pistol magazines, one revolver, and various weapon parts.
Particularly notable is the amount of ammunition: 2,548 rounds of various calibers were removed from the field. As stated by the Police Department, the surrendered and found weapons, ammunition, and mine-explosive devices are safely stored in a warehouse, while some were destroyed at the site of discovery.
The police remind citizens that the Ministry of the Interior's campaign for voluntary surrender of illegal weapons, called 'Less Weapons, Less Tragedies', is still ongoing. According to the Law on the Acquisition and Possession of Weapons by Citizens, voluntary surrender of illegal weapons is exempt from criminal consequences, meaning that those who voluntarily surrender weapons or explosives will not face misdemeanor or criminal proceedings.
Weapons can be surrendered by contacting the police at 192, after which trained police officers will come to a pre-arranged location to take possession of the dangerous item. The confidentiality of the identity of the person surrendering the weapon is ensured.
The Vukovar-Srijem Police Department thanks citizens for their trust and invites all those who still keep weapons or explosive devices in their homes to voluntarily surrender them to the police, thereby making their surroundings safer.
