Residents of Vrana were shocked on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, by an act of vandalism in which an unknown person destroyed a crucifix of Jesus Christ and then attempted to injure a minor with the broken pieces of the statue. Police are conducting a criminal investigation for particularly insolent and indecent behavior, and according to initial information, the suspect was filmed and photographed at the scene.
According to Denis Brzić, as reported by Biograjski.com, an unknown man stopped his vehicle near Oparića Most, at the entrance to Vrana from the direction of Pakoštane, and attacked the crucifix placed along the road in the Marina hamlet. The cross is located in the immediate vicinity of the home of Mladen Rogić, a former comrade-in-arms and company commander in Vrana during the Homeland War.
When Mladen Rogić's daughter, who is a minor, asked the unknown man what he was doing, the situation escalated. The suspect began verbally insulting the girl and threw broken pieces of the crucifix at her. The broken statue fell onto the roadway and blocked the road, and the minor, according to reports, experienced great fear and stress and called for help. Fortunately, she was not seriously injured.
Immediately after the incident, the police were notified and conducted an on-site investigation. Denis Brzić claims that the vehicle and license plates of the person suspected of committing this vandalism were recorded.
The Zadar Police Department told eZadar that they are conducting an investigation due to the very insolent and indecent behavior of the perpetrator, who has not yet been identified. According to their report, the incident occurred around 6:30 PM, when the suspect damaged a wooden cross with the figure of Jesus and behaved insolently toward a minor Croatian citizen.
Additional unrest among residents was caused by the information that the same person returned to the area that same day at around 8:30 PM, accompanied by another individual, coming from the direction of Sokoluša. This is a traffic zone through which many people and vehicles pass at this time of year, especially in the evening when bathers return from the beach.
It is now up to the competent authorities to determine who the person is, all the circumstances of the event, and possible criminal liability.
