Summary
  • UEFA, with CONCACAF and AFC, plans a Global Nations League as an alternative to FIFA's World Cup.
  • A boycott of the Club World Cup and FIFA meetings is being considered due to the conflict with Infantino.
  • The project envisions 7 tournaments with 8 teams each instead of one 48-team World Cup.
  • Infantino reportedly already has support from associations in Asia and Africa for another term.

Relations between UEFA and FIFA have never been more strained. According to the British newspaper The Times, UEFA, together with CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), is seriously considering launching an entirely new international competition that would directly rival the FIFA World Cup. This radical move is reportedly a response to Gianni Infantino's potential bid for a fourth term at the helm of world football's governing body.

The story centers on Aleksander Čeferin, UEFA's president, and Gianni Infantino, FIFA's chief, whose views on the future of club and international football are increasingly diverging. According to foreign media reports, Čeferin is expected to hold a crucial meeting with Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of PSG and the European Club Association (ECA), during the UEFA Super Cup on August 12, 2026.

Boycott of FIFA Competitions on the Table

One of the main topics of discussion between Čeferin and Al-Khelaifi will be the future of the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, a project FIFA wants to further develop. However, according to the same sources, the possibility of a complete boycott of future editions of that competition could also be on the agenda. The reason is the dissatisfaction of some European clubs with unresolved issues regarding organization, the financial model, commercial rights, and revenue distribution, with some clubs reportedly still awaiting payments from earlier FIFA programs.

Among the options being considered is a sort of boycott of FIFA's operations itself, including not attending Council meetings and refusing to ratify certain decisions. "Everyone is determined; there's no turning back," one source told The Times, adding that the world's top national teams would rather play each other than face significantly weaker sides.

Global Nations League: Seven Tournaments Instead of One World Cup

UEFA reportedly has a well-developed project for a Global Nations League, first presented back in 2017 but never brought to life. Now, this plan could be reactivated as the foundation for a new international competition outside FIFA's jurisdiction. According to Sky Sports UK, continental Nations Leagues would serve as the qualifying round for the new tournament.

The best teams from UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, AFC, CAF, and OFC would earn a spot in the Global Nations League, where they would be divided into seven separate competitions based on their FIFA rankings. Each of these tournaments would feature eight national teams, with a knockout format starting from the quarterfinals, and the final hosted in a designated country. In short, instead of one 48-team World Cup, seven different international competitions would be held simultaneously, organized by the continental confederations.

Political Maneuvering at FIFA's Summit

Tensions are also high on the political front. Although Čeferin, according to reports, does not plan to run for the FIFA presidency himself, he is seeking to gather broad support for someone who could challenge Infantino in the next election. Among the names mentioned is Nasser Al-Khelaifi, although those close to the PSG president claim he currently has no such ambition. UEFA vice-president Laura McAllister further fueled the situation by stating that she believes Infantino should face a serious challenger with a different vision in the next election.

On the other hand, Infantino is already taking steps to strengthen his position. Foreign media report that he has secured the backing of many national associations from Asia and Africa, including those from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Morocco, the UAE, and Kuwait. Additional discontent among confederations was sparked by the failed FIFA Forward Enterprises (FFE) project, through which Infantino planned to open up part of commercial revenues to private investors.

Neither UEFA nor FIFA have yet issued an official statement on these claims, so information about a potential boycott and political changes should be taken with caution as it comes from foreign sources. If these reports prove true, world football could be entering one of its most turbulent periods ever.
