Summary
  • The UFC earned $2.49 million from ticket sales at its first event in Serbia, breaking the Belgrade Arena record.
  • Uroš Medić knocked out Daniel Rodriguez in 30 seconds, while Aleksandar Rakić won by decision in his heavyweight debut.
  • The evening set a new UFC record with nine first-round finishes.
  • Controversy arose when Borislav Nikolić chose a song whose lyrics claim Croatian cities Dubrovnik and Knin.

The UFC's debut in Serbia, held at Belgrade's Stark Arena, exceeded all financial expectations. According to data released by the organization and reported by Kurir.rs, ticket sales generated $2,490,023, breaking the arena's record for revenue from a single event. The spectacle was attended live by 18,623 spectators.

This amount, which goes to the UFC, surpassed the revenues of numerous European sports and music events that have been held in Serbia's largest arena over the years. Kurir.rs notes that the total financial impact of the event, including television rights, sponsorships, and ancillary sales, significantly exceeds the box office revenue alone.

Medić's Blitzkrieg and Rakić's Successful Debut

The sporting highlight of the evening came from Uroš Medić, the main advocate for bringing the UFC to Belgrade. In his fight against the experienced American Daniel Rodriguez, Medić needed just 30 seconds to secure a knockout victory, marking his fourth consecutive first-round finish. For this performance, as reported by Kurir.rs, he was also awarded a $100,000 bonus for one of the best performances of the night.

Aleksandar Rakić successfully debuted in the heavyweight division. In a tactically mature fight, he defeated Polish veteran Marcin Tybura by unanimous decision, snapping a four-fight losing streak. On the other hand, former light heavyweight champion Jan Błachowicz of Poland suffered a tough first-round stoppage loss to New Zealand's Navajo Stirling.

A Record Night of Finishes and Disappointments

The event in Belgrade also set a new UFC record with nine first-round finishes. As reported by Net.hr, seven of the eight fights on the preliminary card ended in stoppages. However, not all local fighters had reason to celebrate. Duško Todorović was submitted by Swiss fighter Robert Valentin, Vlasto Čepo was knocked out after one minute by Gilbert Urbina, and Marina Spasić was also submitted in the first round.

Particularly painful was the UFC debut of Montenegrin fighter Miloš Janičić, whose fight against Noah Gugnnon ended in under ninety seconds after a low blow damaged his leg. On the other hand, local fighter Nina Nikolija Milošević impressed with a technical knockout victory over Hailey Cowan, while Jovan Leka and Borislav Nikolić also celebrated victories. In total, according to Kurir.rs, five local representatives secured wins.

Controversy Over a Song Claiming Dubrovnik and Knin

The sporting spectacle, however, did not pass without controversy, particularly sensitive for the Croatian audience. As reported by Net.hr, Serbian fighter Borislav Nikolić chose the song "Sini jarko sunce sa Kosova" by Danica Crnogorčević for his walkout. The lyrics mention, among other cities, the Croatian cities of Dubrovnik and Knin as parts of the Greater Serbia project.

"All Serbs will go like Jugovići for the holy cross to Kosovo. To defend the blessed land, for the holy cross and golden freedom. From Kruševac, Prizren, Cetinje, Dubrovnik, Knin, Nevesinje... From Avala, Lovćen, and Šara, Serbdom cheers, arise, Lazar," reads a portion of the song cited by Net.hr.

Net.hr highlights that the arrival of the world's largest fighting organization in the region was thus used to promote an ideology that transcends sport, casting a shadow of unnecessary discomfort over an otherwise historic and spectacular evening. The UFC has not yet commented on the matter.
