An American armored brigade combat team of 3,500 soldiers suffered heavy simulated losses at the hands of a Ukrainian elite drone unit during the six-month Combined Resolve exercise in Germany, Tom's Hardware reported, citing the Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that its air defense forces destroyed 205 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight over several regions, Crimea, and the Azov and Black Seas.
In the exercise, the 3rd Brigade Combat Team (3rd BCT) of the 1st Cavalry Division faced off against the U.S. Army's opposing force (OPFOR), reinforced by the 412th Unmanned Systems Brigade, known as the 412 Nemesis. This elite Ukrainian multi-purpose unit primarily operates drones, and according to the report, many tanks and other armored vehicles of the 3,500-strong unit were eliminated during simulated engagements.
The 3rd BCT is traditionally equipped with M1 Abrams tanks, M2 and M3 Bradley fighting vehicles, M109 Paladin self-propelled howitzers, and has standard electronic warfare operators and counter-drone protection. However, despite its impressive equipment, it could not cope with the small and agile drones of the 412 Nemesis. As Tom's Hardware notes, the heavy vehicles kicked up clouds of dust during maneuvering, which reconnaissance drones easily spotted, after which drone operators either dropped bombs from hovering attack drones or used FPV drones that directly slammed into targets.
Since this was an exercise, there were no real losses. Damaged or destroyed tanks were marked by an attack drone hovering above them, and after an observer officially declared a 'hit,' the vehicle would return to the rear for a 'respawn' and continue the war game.
Although the U.S. is a pioneer in the use of drones on the battlefield, including reconnaissance and long-range strikes, the Ukrainians have mastered short-range drone warfare while defending against the Russian invasion that began in 2022. The war has lasted more than four years, and the successful use of drones has helped Ukraine halt Russian advances. In addition to tactical use on the front lines, Ukraine has begun strategically deploying drones, conducting strikes deep into Russian territory, including targeting gas infrastructure in Siberia, more than 1,500 miles (2,500 km) from launch sites.
Although the 3rd BCT was 'decimated' in the initial engagements, its performance gradually improved. Soldiers became more adept at dispersing units to complicate targeting and at camouflage and concealment, making it harder for reconnaissance drones to spot them from a distance.
In a separate incident, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its on-duty air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 205 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles. According to a statement carried by the Russian state agency TASS, the drones were destroyed over the Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Volgograd, Kaluga, Kursk, and Rostov regions, Crimea, and over the waters of the Azov and Black Seas.
The event occurred on August 17, 2026, a day after Tom's Hardware published the article about the exercise in Germany.
While some argue that drone warfare has made tanks obsolete, some American officers believe that this is only true in stalemate situations on the battlefield, like the current situation on the Ukrainian front. If a gap were to appear in the lines, mobile warfare would still require a combined effort of tanks, armored vehicles, mobile artillery, helicopter support, and infantry. Ukrainian commanders, however, disagree, arguing that drones, in their experience, have so far made maneuver warfare unfeasible.
Countries around the world are recognizing the drone threat. While building their own drone units, they are simultaneously developing effective countermeasures, such as Lockheed Martin's microwave system or a Chinese portable anti-drone laser. If these devices prove effective on the battlefield, they could shift the balance of power.
