The most severe consequences were recorded in the Tatarstan region, where at least 12 people were killed and 39 injured, according to local authorities. Among the dead is a child, while some of the injured are in serious condition, prompting the formation of an operational headquarters in Nizhnekamsk and the dispatch of medical teams from neighboring cities to assist local doctors.
The primary target was the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, with some sources placing the distance at around 1,600 kilometers. Mayor Radmir Belyaev confirmed that civilian and industrial facilities were hit in the strikes. Russia's state news agency TASS reported that regional authorities described the attack as "massive," and Tatarstan's leader Rustam Minnikhanov declared a day of mourning across the region. Among the targets was the TANECO refinery, owned by Russian oil giant Tatneft and considered one of the most technologically advanced in the country. The facility had already been targeted by a Ukrainian attack in early June, and in 2024 it processed about 17 million tons of crude oil, producing approximately 2.7 million tons of gasoline and 8.5 million tons of diesel fuel.
Meanwhile, drones set fire to the Galaktika shopping center in Makiivka, a former Epicentr that Russian forces seized in 2014. The attacks also caused widespread power outages in Melitopol, Berdiansk, and Donetsk, while explosions and fires were reported in Sevastopol and Kerch.
Russia's Defense Ministry said that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a total of 456 Ukrainian drones overnight, targeting about fifteen regions and the annexed Crimea. In addition to Tatarstan, drones were downed over the Bryansk, Kursk, Kaluga, Tula, Belgorod, Oryol, Voronezh, Rostov, Penza, Ulyanovsk, Saratov, Orenburg, Samara, and Moscow regions, as well as the Krasnodar Krai and the Republic of Crimea. Fifteen drones were shot down near Moscow, causing disruptions at airports. In the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, local authorities reported the death of a woman in a drone attack on a house in the village of Novaya Tavolzhanka. These attacks represent a continuation of Ukraine's intensified strategy of striking strategic targets deep within Russian territory. Recall that on July 6, 2026, an attack was carried out on Russia's largest oil refinery in Omsk, located more than 2,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, after which the facility was forced to completely halt operations.
