Bulgarian Prince Mirko of Panagyurishte and Dr. Marta Embid have decided to tie the knot. The news of their engagement was announced on Monday, August 10, 2026, with wedding celebrations planned for the upcoming summer in Madrid.
Prince Mirko, the firstborn son of Bulgarian Prince Kubrat and grandson of Bulgaria's last monarch, Simeon II, was born in the Spanish capital. Unlike many nobles, he chose a career in medicine. He completed his medical degree at the University of Navarra and undertook specialist training in general and digestive surgery at the Clínico San Carlos Hospital in Madrid.
It was at that very hospital that his path crossed with Marta Embid, a resident in anesthesiology and intensive care. Their romantic story began in 2023, and their first public appearance together came in April 2024 at the wedding of Madrid's mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and Teresa Urquijo.
By choosing medicine, the young prince followed in the footsteps of his father, Prince Kubrat, who has been a respected surgeon on the Spanish medical scene for decades. Mirko has repeatedly emphasized that his father is his main role model, from whom he learned the true values-dedication to work, family, and friendships.
Mirko's grandfather, Simeon II, was Bulgaria's last monarch, reigning until the abolition of the monarchy in 1946. After decades in exile, he returned to his homeland, where he served as prime minister from 2001 to 2005. Although the Bulgarian dynasty no longer holds formal power, its members maintain close ties with European royal families, and most of them live and work in Spain.
