The Osijek-Baranja Police Department announced on Monday, August 10, that it had found a 25-year-old man suspected of attempting to murder a 62-year-old man. The attack occurred on Friday, August 7, 2026, in King Držislav Park in Osijek.
According to the police report, the 25-year-old, from the wider Osijek area, approached the 62-year-old at around 2:20 PM and inflicted multiple stab and slash wounds on his arms and body with a sharp object. The attack occurred without any prior conflict or motive that the investigation has established so far. After seriously injuring the man, the attacker fled the scene.
The injured 62-year-old was rushed to the Osijek University Hospital Center, where he was diagnosed with severe physical injuries and was admitted for hospital treatment. The fact that the case was reclassified from causing serious bodily harm to attempted murder speaks volumes about the severity of the injuries and the circumstances of the incident.
During the criminal investigation, officers from the Osijek First Police Station with the Čepin branch, acting on a court order, searched the home and other premises used by the suspect. During the search, items suspected to be connected to the criminal offense were found and seized. The police have not yet disclosed details about the nature of these items.
The day after the attack, on August 8 at 11 PM, the 25-year-old was handed over to the detention supervisor of the Osijek-Baranja Police Department. A criminal complaint for attempted murder was filed against him with the Osijek County State Attorney's Office. For now, the motive behind this brutal attack, which occurred in broad daylight in a public place, remains unknown. Further proceedings should shed light on all the circumstances and motives, and the competent judicial authorities will decide on the suspect's criminal responsibility.
