A fire that broke out on Monday evening in the area of Gornji Igrani, east of Makarska, was successfully brought under control. In the demanding firefighting operation on extremely inaccessible terrain, 37 firefighters with eight vehicles took part, and two water-bombing planes provided support from the air, the Makarska Public Fire Brigade reported.

Mario Čović, commander of the Makarska firefighters, confirmed to Hina that the fire report was received shortly after 6 p.m. "We received the report shortly after 6 p.m., and 37 firefighters with eight vehicles quickly responded, along with two water-bombing planes that joined the aerial firefighting efforts, and this evening we managed to bring the flames under control," said Čović.

Battling the fire on inaccessible terrain

The firefighting was particularly challenging due to the terrain configuration where the fire broke out. Because of the inaccessibility, the firefighting water tanker could not reach the fire site itself. To overcome this obstacle, firefighters laid out as much as 700 meters of fire hoses to connect with the tanker and secure the much-needed water for extinguishing.

Despite the difficult conditions, the fire was contained in the evening hours. According to Commander Čović, the fire consumed about one and a half hectares of forest and low vegetation, but residential buildings were never threatened.

Overnight watch at the fire site

Although the fire is under control, the danger has not completely passed. A portion of the firefighting forces remained on the ground to clear the fire site and prevent any potential re-ignition. During the night, firefighting patrols will periodically inspect the area and monitor the situation, Čović confirmed.
