Despite numerous appeals, human negligence remains the leading cause of outdoor fires. The Pregrada Volunteer Fire Department recorded two such interventions in just two days, confirming how reckless behavior can be dangerous, especially as temperatures reach 40 degrees Celsius.
The first report came in on Thursday, August 6, 2026. A large grass fire broke out on Franje Cvjetka Street, and firefighters responded within just four minutes. They dispatched an attack vehicle, a water tender, and six firefighters. As reported by the Pregrada Volunteer Fire Department, the fire was reported quite late, which further complicated the situation.
During extinguishing operations, firefighters encountered a concerning sight, a person who was disoriented and dehydrated, attempting to control the blaze on their own. Emergency medical services were immediately called, and the injured individual was transported to the hospital. This intervention consumed 6,000 liters of water, with firefighters logging a total of eight hours of work, while vehicles were engaged for two and a half hours.
Less than 24 hours later, on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 5:11 PM, firefighters were again alerted. This time, an outdoor fire broke out in Bregi Kostelski. Eight firefighters responded with an attack vehicle and a water tender. They immediately began extinguishing the grass and dense underbrush and quickly brought the situation under control.
Mopping up and watering the edges of the fire site continued until 6:30 PM. This intervention used 500 liters of water, firefighters logged 13.5 hours of work, and vehicles were engaged for a total of 3.5 hours.
The Pregrada Volunteer Fire Department once again issues a strong appeal to all citizens to be extremely cautious during high temperatures and dry periods. They particularly warn that an outdoor fire can spread within minutes and that attempting to extinguish it alone is extremely dangerous and can endanger life.
"The most important thing is to report the fire to the relevant services immediately and move to a safe location," the firefighters urge, emphasizing that a quick response and calling the authorities is key to preventing larger disasters.
