From Rijeka to the Islands: Who Was on the Ground

The list of deployed forces reveals a wide range of tasks that required coordination between professional and volunteer units. Members of the Public Fire Brigades (JVP) from the City of Rijeka, Crikvenica, Opatija, the City of Mali Lošinj, and the City of Krk responded to the incidents. They were joined by volunteer fire departments (DVD) from Bribir, Malinska, Njivice, Sušak, Čavle, Kostrena, Drenova, Halubjan, and Brod Moravice.

Grass, Apartment, and Utility Pole Fires

Typical firefighting interventions were not absent. Grass and low vegetation burned at several locations, in Rijeka, Marinići, Kostrena, and Malinska. There was also an apartment fire in Crikvenica and a utility pole fire in Rijeka. During extinguishing operations, firefighters also conducted cleanup and inspection of fire sites, and interventions included grill fires and reports of smoke odors.

Snakes, Fallen Tree, and Rescue from Inaccessible Terrain

The weekend was also marked by interventions that go beyond everyday fires. In several cases, firefighters were called out for snakes, specifically in Dramalj, Tribalj, Rijeka, and Kućela. In Crikvenica, they removed a large tree that had fallen onto Balustrada Beach, while in Lovran they assisted in rescuing injured individuals from a hard-to-reach area. On the island of Krk, they rescued a driver after his car veered off the road.

Technical Assistance and Care for Wildlife

Technical interventions were also numerous. Firefighters provided assistance to utility companies, removed rings, and opened apartments. On Lošinj, they were engaged in an unusual task, transporting water for wildlife. Over the weekend, they also provided security for numerous medical flights, further confirming the breadth of their responsibilities.

"Safety has no working hours, we are always here for you, 24 hours a day," the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Fire Association stated, thanking all the firefighters who were deployed over the weekend.
