Donna Vekić failed to secure a spot in the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. The Croatian, seeded 31st, lost in the second round to China's Xinyu Wang 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 after two hours and 13 minutes of play.
The Osijek native started the match strongly, taking the first set 6-3. In the second set, she led 1-0 with a break, but then suffered a major collapse. Wang won six games in a row to level the match at 6-1.
In the decisive third set, a fierce battle ensued until 4-4, when Vekić lost her serve for the fourth time in the match. The Chinese player then served out confidently for the match and victory.
Vekić hit five aces with 62 percent of first serves in, converting two of five break points. Wang, currently ranked 36th in the world, recorded her first win in their third career meeting.
With this defeat, Croatia has no representatives left in singles at the ATP and WTA tournament in Cincinnati. In the first round, Dino Prižmić, Petra Marčinko, Antonia Ružić, and Marin Čilić were eliminated, while Vekić ended her participation in the second round.
