On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, shortly after 1 p.m., a major fire broke out at the Kronospan factory in Bjelovar. The fire was reported at 1:21 p.m., and members of the Bjelovar Public Fire Brigade were immediately dispatched to the scene. The flames engulfed an internal facility located on Slavonska Street, specifically igniting on the cooling tower within the plant.
Initially, three vehicles and six firefighters responded, and soon 15 firefighters with six vehicles were on site. During the extinguishing efforts, an explosion occurred. Davor Đalog, commander of the Bjelovar Public Fire Brigade, explained what happened: "It was a secondary effect of the fire caused by the mixing of flammable compounds, but no one was injured." As confirmed by the county fire chief, Josip Heger, the extinguishing operation is still ongoing, but the fire has been brought under control. According to available information, no one was injured in the fire, which is the most important news given the scale of the event. A large number of firefighters are on the scene, making maximum efforts to fully extinguish the flames and prevent them from reigniting.
What caused the fire to break out is currently unknown. Commander Đalog added that it is still difficult to speculate on the cause, and that other competent services will determine it later. More detailed information about the cause, as well as any material damage, is expected after firefighters complete their intervention and conduct an investigation. There has been no official statement from Kronospan so far.
