The past weekend on the roads of Bjelovar-Bilogora County was marked by an alarming number of traffic violations. Police officers recorded a total of 336 violations, with the vast majority—282 of them—being speeding offenses.

Reckless Driving in Prespa: 125 km/h Where the Sign Says 50

The most drastic example of irresponsible driving was recorded on Friday in the town of Prespa. On a stretch of road where the speed limit is 50 kilometers per hour, one driver was clocked at a whopping 125 km/h, exceeding the limit by more than double.

Over the weekend, police also caught four drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol. The record holder was a 55-year-old man stopped on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 10:45 a.m. in Bjelovar. His blood alcohol concentration was measured at 1.26 g/kg.

No Seatbelt, Phone Use, and Driving Without a License

In addition to speeding and alcohol, police identified a range of other violations that jeopardize road safety. There were 15 cases of not wearing a seatbelt, three violations for improper phone use while driving, and one case of driving before obtaining the right to operate a vehicle. Additionally, three technically defective and unregistered vehicles were discovered, along with 28 other traffic violations.

Two Accidents, Two Injured

Besides violations, the weekend was also marked by two traffic accidents in which two people were injured. In Trojstveni Markovac, a 76-year-old female driver lost control due to inappropriate speed, veered off the road, and sustained minor injuries. A collision in Stara Plošćica had more severe consequences, where a 56-year-old cyclist was seriously injured in a crash with a passenger car.

Police Appeal

The Bjelovar-Bilogora Police Department once again appeals to all road users to respect traffic regulations and adapt their speed to road conditions. A special appeal is directed at drivers not to get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol, not to use their phones while driving, and to always fasten their seatbelts. Responsible behavior on the road protects your own life and the safety of all other road users.

Although most of last week's interventions were related to speed and alcohol, police also previously recorded a case of driving under the influence of drugs. On Wednesday, August 5, around 9:30 p.m., a 30-year-old female driver was stopped at Ante Starčević Square in Hrastovac. A preliminary drug test indicated the presence of amphetamines in her system, but she refused to provide blood and urine samples for toxicological analysis. Due to the violation, she was arrested and held in special facilities until being brought before the competent court. But that wasn't the end: her 32-year-old male passenger voluntarily handed over nearly three grams of amphetamines to the officers. Both will face misdemeanor charges.
