Residents and tourists on the island of Vis faced a complete power outage on Saturday evening, August 8, 2026. The disruption occurred at the height of the tourist season, when the island is packed with visitors.
According to information from the DalmacijaDanas portal, supply problems had been ongoing throughout the day. Electricity went out multiple times at short intervals, before a complete system collapse on the entire island in the evening hours.
From Hrvatska elektroprivreda (HEP), it was confirmed that the cause of the problem is a fault on the 35 kV cable. The cable is located in the area of the island of Hvar and connects several substations, and its failure directly affected the power supply to Vis.
HEP teams are on the ground working to locate the exact point of the fault. Given that it is an underground cable, the process is complex. Once the fault is located, excavation will be necessary to reach the damaged section and begin repairs.
At this moment, HEP could not specify how long the fault repair will take. It is unknown when the power supply on Vis will be restored. Residents and numerous guests are patiently waiting for the outcome, while work is intensively underway.
