A Mi-171Sh helicopter of the Croatian Air Force (CAF) carried out an urgent medical transport of a critically ill pregnant woman from Dubrovnik General Hospital to the Clinical Hospital Center (KBC) Split. The operation, which demanded maximum coordination and speed, involved four military crew members and two medical team members.
Upon receiving the request for urgent transport, the aircraft from the 395th Transport Helicopter Squadron of the 93rd Air Force Wing took off from the "Knez Trpimir" barracks in Divulje. The patient was transported from Dubrovnik to Split in the shortest possible time, and upon landing, she was handed over to the doctors at KBC Split for further treatment.
The crew commander emphasized the gravity of such operations, noting that "every urgent medical flight carries great responsibility, but it is especially pronounced when simultaneously helping a mother and her unborn child." In such situations, time literally determines the outcome, and the crew's readiness, the speed of helicopter takeoff, and the flawless cooperation between the military and healthcare systems must not suffer any delay.
Throughout the flight, the pregnant woman was under constant supervision of the medical team. This event once again confirmed that military helicopters are not intended solely for defense tasks, when a human life is at stake, their ability to bridge hundreds of kilometers in a short time becomes direct and invaluable assistance to civilian healthcare.
The Croatian Air Force regularly participates in urgent medical transports from southern Croatia and the islands during the tourist season, especially in cases where the patient's health condition does not allow for prolonged road transport. In this case, it involved two extremely delicate situations during a single flight, the life of the pregnant woman and the life of her unborn child. In such moments, error is not an option; there is only professionalism, composure, and time that must not be lost.
