Works worth €215,000 are expected to be completed by early or mid-November, and the playground will also get a restored water tap.
This month, with a slight delay from the original plan, renovation works on the Military Playground at the Rijeka Campus have begun. Workers are already on site removing the worn-out surface, and over the coming months, the playground will receive a fully renovated athletics track.
Back in March 2026, during the Q&A session at the City Council meeting, Deputy Mayor Vedran Vivoda announced this renovation. Subsequently, the City of Rijeka stated that works should begin during the summer, and after the public procurement process, the contract was awarded to the company Maxmar Grupa from Klinča Sela.
The project includes a comprehensive renovation of the athletics track. The old and worn-out surface is being removed, and where tree roots from nearby trees have caused damage, excavation and root removal are planned. The next steps involve preparing the base, laying geotextile and a sub-base layer, and finally asphalt paving.
In the final phase of the works, a new sports surface made of rubber granulate and polyurethane binder, i.e., a new tartan track, will be installed. Once the renovation is complete, new athletics lines and markings will be painted.
The renovation should bring another change important to the many recreational users who use the playground daily. Additionally, the water tap will be restored, so users will again have access to drinking water at the playground.
The importance of the Military Playground as a recreational space on the Campus is confirmed by data from the City of Rijeka, which recorded over 100,000 user entries in 2025. The works are worth approximately €215,000 including VAT, with a contractual deadline of three months. Given this timeline, completion can be expected most likely by early or mid-November 2026.
