Driving cars on the tram tracks on Savska Street in Zagreb has once again sparked a debate, this time on Reddit. A Zagreb resident asked on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, what a tram passenger can do when they notice vehicles moving along the yellow lane. "It's not a taxi driver. What can we, as people on the tram, do?" was his question.

The question quickly triggered a range of reactions from users, from ironic suggestions to more serious discussions about the state of traffic and the functioning of state services. One response suggested that the author of the post should try breaking the rules himself to see what the fines are like.

Fines Equal for Drivers and Pedestrians

"Well, you could take a walk on the yellow lane instead of the sidewalk one day. The fine for driving on the yellow lane and for walking on the roadway are both 30 euros," one Reddit user wrote ironically. Another, however, was more specific: "But seriously, you can't do anything except call the police. It's not your job to enforce traffic violations. And the fact that our state services don't work is a deeper topic."

On Savska Street in Zagreb, rubber separators have been installed along a 2.5-kilometer stretch, from Veslačka to Dalmatinska Street, to physically separate the yellow lanes from the rest of traffic. This has prevented unauthorized vehicles from passing, and the yellow line on that section now also prohibits traffic for taxis.

Barriers Are Not the Solution, Some Claim

Some users believe that physical barriers are not the real solution to the problem. "Solve traffic in the whole city, and no one will drive on the yellow lane. These barriers don't solve anything; they just look ugly," one of them wrote. He emphasized that if there were a mass shift from private cars to public transport, the system would probably not be able to handle such a burden.

A third user offered a somewhat different perspective on drivers using the tram lane. "You can watch and continue riding the tram, and ask yourself why someone is driving on the tracks, and come to several conclusions where the person isn't necessarily a jerk you need to get revenge on. Maybe a little empathy for a change?" he said.
