The heat wave gripping Croatia isn't just making life uncomfortable for drivers-it's putting serious stress on nearly every critical component of your vehicle. During the summer months, the engine, tires, brakes, battery, and electronic systems operate under far more demanding conditions, and the risk of breakdowns climbs even higher if the car isn't in perfect shape or is driven aggressively.
According to Autoportal, special attention should be paid to the engine and cooling system. Proper cooling relies on a functioning thermostat and fan, while a clean, mechanically sound engine dissipates excess heat more effectively. Before a long trip, experts recommend checking the oil level and coolant.
The oil on the dipstick should be close to the maximum mark, as a larger volume cools more efficiently. In the expansion tank, the coolant should sit roughly halfway between the minimum and maximum marks. It's also worth checking the battery's condition, even if it's marketed as maintenance-free.
Prolonged sun exposure is especially tough on the interior. While the black dashboard is made from materials that can handle high temperatures, damage can still occur over time. High heat isn't good for the radio, other electronics, or any phones left in closed compartments.
Drivers should never lower tire pressure on their own during the summer. An underinflated tire flexes more, causing it to heat up faster and become more prone to damage. Always set tire pressure according to the manufacturer's recommendations, and when the car is fully loaded with luggage, use the values for heavier loads.
Before setting off, be sure to inspect the tread, sidewalls, and inner surface of each tire. Any cracks or significant damage are clear signs the tire needs replacing. Although modern tires resist UV rays, high temperatures still accelerate wear and reduce the flexibility of the rubber.
The turbocharger is particularly exposed to high temperatures. Exhaust gases can heat the turbine to over 850 degrees Celsius, and in gasoline engines, temperatures can exceed 950 degrees. External heat adds to the thermal load, especially in engines that have been tuned for more power.
That's why it's crucial to use high-quality fully synthetic oil and avoid shutting off the engine immediately after a very demanding drive. If you cut the engine abruptly, the oil that lubricates and cools the turbo stops circulating, and residual heat can seriously damage the seals, shaft, and other components of the assembly.
The air conditioning system adds extra load to the engine because it drives the compressor. A properly maintained system will cool the cabin faster and use less fuel. Efficiency improves with a clean condenser and evaporator, plus timely replacement of the cabin filter. It's recommended to set the cabin temperature no more than six degrees Celsius below the outside temperature, which reduces fuel consumption, engine strain, and the thermal shock passengers feel when exiting.
There's also a common misconception that you shouldn't fill the fuel tank to the top for fear of explosion. Fuel expands when heated, which is why a properly functioning venting system is so important. When refueling, stop when the pump nozzle clicks off the first time, and don't try to top off.
Even choosing a parking spot can make a big difference. A car that's at least partially shaded cools down more easily than one that's been baking in the sun for hours. After starting, the engine generates extra heat, making it even harder to cool down an already sweltering cabin.
Regular checks of fluids, tires, battery, and the cooling system can prevent far more expensive failures during the summer and make for a more relaxed journey.
