The sequel to one of the best-selling games of all time is expected to significantly boost studio revenue, with a speculated release in late 2028.
Warner Bros. has officially confirmed in its latest earnings report that a second installment of Hogwarts Legacy is actively in development. While specific details about the game, such as its look, story, or release date, have not been disclosed, it's clear that the studio is banking heavily on this title for the future.
According to a report from IGN, Warner Bros. expects games like the Hogwarts Legacy sequel to "significantly contribute" to the company's future revenue. The report states: "We expect games to contribute more meaningfully to segment profitability in the future as our portfolio expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy."
The first Hogwarts Legacy game, released in 2023, has sold over 40 million copies, placing it among the best-selling games of all time. It was the first game since 2009 that wasn't a Call of Duty or Rockstar Games title to be the best-selling game of the year.
Warner Bros. had previously emphasized that a successor to Hogwarts Legacy was a top priority following the success of the first game, so the confirmation of the sequel's development comes as no surprise to industry watchers.
The confirmation comes at a time when the entire Harry Potter franchise is gearing up for a major comeback. Warner Bros. plans to reboot the franchise with a TV adaptation on HBO, scheduled to premiere around Christmas 2026. The series has already been renewed for a second season, and its cast includes major stars like Nicholas Hoult.
This TV adaptation will almost certainly spark renewed interest in the brand and further heighten anticipation for the game's sequel.
Given that the first game was released in 2023, IGN freelancer Cade Onder speculates that the sequel could arrive by late 2028, if not sooner. Much of the work on designing Hogwarts and its surrounding areas has already been completed, which could allow the team to develop faster by reusing existing assets.
There's also a possibility that the sequel could be a launch title for the PlayStation 6, whose release is speculated for fall 2027, but these are just speculations for now. One thing is certain: new wizarding adventures are on the way.
