After years of waiting, Android and iPhone users can now listen to messages and dictate replies in the car without touching their phones.
After years of waiting, Android and iPhone users can now listen to messages and dictate replies in the car without touching their phones.
Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, began rolling out the long-awaited features for drivers on Android Auto and CarPlay platforms in July 2026. These voice functions, which have been missing for years, now enable safer communication while driving.
Until now, WhatsApp in the car was mostly limited to dictating messages and making calls. On CarPlay, users had to rely on Siri for any interaction. With the latest update, incoming messages can be read aloud, and drivers can then use voice dictation to reply, without needing to use their hands or touch their phones.
This approach directly targets the issue of distracted driving, specifically the safety risk posed when drivers type messages on their smartphones while behind the wheel. Using voice commands allows drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, aligning with broader safety improvements, such as the integration of Google Gemini into Android Auto.
In addition to voice features, call history is now visible directly on the car's screen, allowing drivers to quickly review recent conversations. It's also possible to call favorite contacts with a single tap, which wasn't possible before.
On the car's home screen, both on Android Auto and CarPlay, there is now a dedicated WhatsApp icon. While it may seem like a minor detail, many long-time users were frustrated that this icon didn't exist before.
Meta is introducing these features gradually, as it typically does. There is no exact date for when they will be available to everyone, and according to earlier reports, availability has varied in recent weeks depending on the device and region. These features arrive via updates to the WhatsApp app on your smartphone, so there's no need to install anything new in the car itself.
WhatsApp currently has nearly two billion users worldwide. While not everyone uses the app in the car, millions of people do use it while driving. For them, these new features are a welcome and long-awaited addition to Android Auto and CarPlay.
