According to multiple specialized portals, on July 29, 2026, WhatsApp finally enabled what many users have long been waiting for: making and receiving audio and video calls directly through a web browser. Until now, calls were reserved exclusively for the mobile app and the standalone desktop application, but Meta Platforms, WhatsApp's owner, has now extended support to the web interface.
As reported by Tportal, a Calls tab appears on WhatsApp's web interface, with a complete call history and favorite contacts. In addition, reactions, screen sharing, and group calls are available, just like in the native apps. All calls are protected by end-to-end encryption and have no time limits or extra costs, Klix.ba emphasizes. MacRumors points out that web calls will be especially welcome for those using business computers where it is not possible to install additional software.
Among the new features is the ability to transfer an active call from one device to another without interrupting the connection (Call Transfer). For example, a call received on a computer or in a web browser can be continued on your smartphone and vice versa. In addition, when creating a link to a group call with the "Require approval to join" option enabled, participants first enter a waiting room, and the host approves them when ready. The Noise Suppression feature removes background noise for clearer audio, while QuickHD allows video calls to appear in high resolution from the very first seconds, eliminating the previous brief adjustment period.
TechCrunch, as reported by Croatian media, states that WhatsApp recently opened reservations for usernames. When this option is fully implemented, users will be able to call others across different platforms using their own username, without exchanging phone numbers.
WhatsApp announced that the new features will be "available to everyone soon."
