The massive wildfires that have ravaged Dalmatia in recent days, particularly the Omiš area, have left behind scorched homes, cars, and forests. As firefighters battled the blaze that spread toward populated areas, many residents and tourists spent nights in fear. A woman's body was found in the burned area, and the most seriously injured patients were transferred to Zagreb for treatment.
Friday was no calmer. Firefighters continued to patrol and extinguish hotspots, with flames rekindling in some locations. New fires also broke out in other parts of Dalmatia, prompting firefighting units to be dispatched where help was most needed.
Readers Split on Fear and Summer Vacations
After everything that happened, we asked readers on the official Facebook page of Zagreb.info whether the numerous fires made them afraid to go on vacation. Comments quickly poured in, and opinions were divided. While some stressed that fires wouldn't stop them from hitting the beach, others admitted that such situations do instill fear.
One user wrote that fear doesn't grip him because he loves his country. "I'm not afraid; I love my Croatia, our beautiful Adriatic, and wonderful people. The questions we should be addressing are who's entering our country, how to help the sick, how to improve the standard of living... that's what we should be discussing," he said.
One reader believes that dangerous situations can happen anywhere and that a certain amount of fear isn't necessarily a bad thing. "Anything can happen to a living person anywhere. What's important is to do everything to try to prevent all potential situations. Have we always done everything? Without fear, a person would be so full of themselves that they could go anywhere and do anything. Fear is good; it protects us. I'm not afraid in advance, but if I experienced it, I would be. Despite the fear, I'd stay and help put out the fire if needed," she wrote.
Conspiracy Theories and a View from Germany
Among the comments, one reader claimed the fires were no coincidence. "It's ALL STAGED!!! AT THE SAME TIME, EVERYWHERE. CROATIA, ITALY, terribly high temperatures, THE SUN IS BLAZING," she wrote.
One reader chimed in from Germany, warning that high temperatures and fires aren't just a problem in Croatia and other parts of the Mediterranean. "What, even here near Cologne they're putting out a big fire, currently 14.08.26, temperature 36 degrees, the Rhine at a very low water level. Come on now, it's not just the Mediterranean burning; Europe is burning," he wrote.
