Zagreb Resident Fires Back at Critics

A Reddit discussion comparing Zagreb's legal landfill with an illegal toxic waste site in Gospić sparked a sharp response from one user offering a pointed analysis of the differences.
A debate over the waste disposal sites in Jakuševec and Gospić unfolded on Reddit, where one user fiercely responded to those equating the two cases, insisting they are fundamentally different matters.
"It's fascinating how you equate a legal municipal waste landfill that is regularly inspected and monitored with an illegal dump of toxic and medical waste imported from other countries, which exists only because of bribes," wrote the Zagreb resident on Reddit.
He added that efforts to close Jakuševec are actively underway but are being blocked by the same crowd that enabled the illegal dump in Gospić. The key issue, he said, is the stalling of the permit for the CGO Resnik waste management center, without which closing Jakuševec is impossible.
A Zagreb resident living near Jakuševec chimed in, asking why locals receive compensation for reduced quality of life in the area of the Jakuševec-Prudinec landfill. "OK, PFAS chemicals may not have been found, but the air is polluted, and I believe the soil is too. Let me note that there isn't a single household where at least one person hasn't had cancer," he wrote.
In his comment, he also mentioned a landslide on a hill revealing buried waste that residents separate, only for it all to end up in one pile. "Gospić made headlines everywhere, but Jakuševec is 'legal,' so it doesn't matter," he added.
Another Reddit user went a step further, describing Jakuševec as a ticking time bomb. "One day, when it blows, half the city will vanish-it's a ticking time bomb full of gases, and it's +40°C outside. Then you'll say Putin hit us with rockets," he wrote.
