To mitigate the effects of African swine fever, Osijek-Baranja County will allocate €20,000 in aid to each of the municipalities of Đurđenovac and Draž. County Prefect Nataša Tramišak has signed the decision on the allocation of financial assistance, and these municipalities are among the hardest hit by the spread of the disease in the county, as reported by Osijek Express.
These funds are intended to support local communities in dealing with the consequences of a disease that seriously threatens pig farmers, agricultural producers, and the local economy.
Prefect Tramišak emphasized that the situation is particularly difficult for farmers in the Đurđenovac and Draž areas and that the aim of this aid is to make a concrete contribution to the most affected local communities.
"In recent weeks, African swine fever has once again severely affected certain areas of our county, and we are aware of how difficult the situation is for our farmers, especially in the municipalities of Đurđenovac and Draž. With this financial assistance, we want to make a concrete contribution to the local communities that are most affected and help them alleviate the consequences they are facing," the prefect stated.
The prefect particularly stressed the importance of implementing prescribed biosecurity measures, which she considers crucial for preventing further spread of the disease.
"The only way to protect our production, preserve family farms, and prevent further spread of the disease is to consistently and without exception implement all prescribed biosecurity measures. Therefore, I strongly appeal to all pig farmers to immediately introduce the highest biosecurity standards and cease any activity that could pose a risk of introducing the virus to their farms," the prefect emphasized.
How important the situation is for Osijek-Baranja County is best shown by pig farming data. The county has 4,875 pig-keeping facilities, and as of July 1, 2026, nearly 298,000 pigs were recorded. Osijek-Baranja County's share of Croatia's total pig production is as much as 34 percent.
In combating African swine fever, responsibility lies not only with institutions but also with each individual farmer. Osijek-Baranja County will continue to monitor the situation on the ground and, in line with its capabilities and powers, provide support to local communities and pig farmers.
