Summary
  • Drowning is most often silent and unnoticed; the person does not wave their arms or call for help.
  • Key signs include no leg movement, head at mouth level, and a glassy stare.
  • In case of danger, call 112 immediately, and if the victim is not breathing, start CPR with 5 initial rescue breaths and continue in a 30:2 ratio.
  • Children's water aids are not a substitute for parental supervision, and drowning is the second leading cause of death worldwide.

Every summer, heatwaves lure countless people to rivers and lakes in search of refreshment. Many consider them a safe alternative to the sea, but it is precisely unmarked rivers and lakes, such as Lake Raktije near Zagreb, that are among the most dangerous natural swimming spots. Unpredictable currents, whirlpools, sudden depth changes, and low water temperatures can surprise even experienced swimmers, and tragic outcomes are often the result of failing to recognize the danger in time.

From the Red Cross, an organization that conducts lifeguard training programs, they warn that it is crucial to dispel the most common misconception about drowning. It is not loud and dramatic as often depicted.

"Drowning is often not loud or easily noticeable, which is why it is important to know how to recognize its signs. The characteristic body position of a drowning person involves the absence of leg movements, while the head is submerged to mouth level. The gaze may be glassy or absent, and the arms are usually extended outward alongside the body in an attempt to stay afloat. Since the person tries to stay above water, the head may alternately sink below the surface and resurface," explains the Red Cross.

How to React in a Moment of Danger

If you notice a person with these signs while swimming, your own safety comes first. The Red Cross emphasizes that you should not approach a person in danger if doing so risks your own life. Instead, immediately alert lifeguards or call emergency services at 112.

Once the victim has been brought to safety, it is necessary to quickly assess their condition. If the person is breathing, place them in the recovery position and monitor them until help arrives. If the person is not breathing, after calling 112 or 194, begin CPR immediately. The procedure starts with five initial rescue breaths, followed by alternating chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of 30:2.

"Continue CPR until emergency medical services arrive. If there is a possibility to switch the person performing CPR, the switch should be done every two minutes," the Red Cross points out.

Children's Floaties Are Not a Substitute for Supervision

Besides failing to recognize silent drowning, there are several other dangerous misconceptions. One is the belief that entering the water immediately after eating carries no risk. An even greater danger is the belief among parents that children's swimming aids, such as arm bands or rings, can prevent drowning.

"Such aids are not a substitute for constant and direct parental supervision, which is crucial for the safety of children in and around water," warns the Red Cross. These warnings are not exaggerated given that drowning is the second leading cause of death worldwide, right after traffic accidents. Therefore, the Red Cross appeals that time spent in and around water should be taken with utmost seriousness and responsibility.
