Boris Dežulović's novel "Who Is That Man?, A Report on One Possibility", this year's winner of tportal's literary award for the best Croatian novel, has been available as an audiobook since August 4, 2026. The audio edition was created in collaboration between tportal and the book&zvook platform, and is performed by actor Rakan Rushaidat.
The novel is set in Munich in 1923, during the hyperinflation and social upheaval of the Weimar Republic. Through the eyes of Walter Friedrich, a journalist, film cameraman, and the only formally fictional character, the reader is immersed in a city where art, science, and politics intertwine. On this stage, historical figures such as Thomas Mann and Albert Einstein meet, Wagner's music echoes, and a name is spoken that will define the coming decade.
Dežulović crafts a layered narrative that blends political history, philosophical reflection, and thriller elements, returning the reader to a moment when the future had not yet been written.
At the 19th tportal Award for Novel of the Year ceremony, the jury described the work as
"a multi-layered and intriguing narrative"that combines speculative fiction and philosophical musings through meticulously reconstructed circumstances of the Weimar Republic. The author's dense linguistic fabric, woven from quotes, paraphrases, and multilingualism, was particularly highlighted.
It was precisely this rich linguistic style that posed a special challenge for the audio adaptation. Dežulović's sprawling sentences and numerous historical voices required an interpretation that preserves the rhythm and inner tension of the text. Rakan Rushaidat, with his measured and assured voice, guides the listener through dozens of historical figures and different speech registers, without simplifying or over-dramatizing the original.
The audiobook thus does not represent a mere transfer to another medium, but a new experience in which the author's text and the actor's interpretation complement each other.
The audiobook "Who Is That Man?" is available on the book&zvook platform, a production company founded in 2018 that continuously works on popularizing domestic literature in audio format. Tportal will gift its readers promotional codes for free listening, with details of the giveaway to be announced on their Instagram profile in the coming days.
