French and British vessels rescued 157 migrants on Tuesday morning after their boat caught fire during a perilous attempt to cross the English Channel. The incident occurred right on the border of the two countries' territorial waters, triggering an urgent rescue operation on both sides.
According to a statement from the Pas-de-Calais prefecture, the situation was extremely dramatic. "The small boat caught fire on the border of French and British waters, causing its passengers to throw themselves into the sea," local authorities told AFP. They added that "at this moment" there were no reported casualties. According to information from the French maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea, as reported by BBC News, the fire was caused by the vessel's engine.
The operation is considered one of the major rescue missions at sea since the crossings of the Channel in unsafe, makeshift boats began in 2018.
