During the observance of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, as well as the anniversary of the military-police operation Storm, we must not forget that among the defenders were many who had worn sports jerseys before the war. Karlovac, which endured enemy attacks for months, made a tremendous contribution to that struggle, and the local sports community suffered irreparable losses.
Croatia's independence also brought the formation of separate sports institutions. At the end of 1990, the Croatian Sports Federation was founded, and in early February 1991, the Karlovac Sports Federation was established. In September of the same year, they were joined by the Croatian Olympic Committee. However, instead of peaceful development, sports, along with the entire country, were soon thrust into a wartime environment.
The first months of the conflict brought severe destruction to sports infrastructure. The newly built bowling alley in Mostanje was completely destroyed, while the School Sports Hall in Rakovac, the Sokol Hall, the stadium by the Korana River, the tennis courts in Vranićev Perivoj, and the Rowing House in Dubovac suffered extensive damage. Although many playing fields of Karlovac clubs were devastated, this failed to extinguish the city's sporting passion.
While projectiles fell on Karlovac, a large number of athletes and sports workers decided to trade their cleats and equipment for military gear. Footballers, handball players, bowlers, rowers, taekwondo practitioners, hikers, motorcyclists, tennis players, volleyball players, and representatives of many other disciplines joined the ranks to defend their city and homeland.
Many returned to their clubs after the war and continued their sports careers. Unfortunately, for 43 athletes and sports workers, that was not possible. They gave their lives for Croatia's freedom. They remain forever young, leaving behind unfulfilled sporting ambitions, empty locker room benches, and the immense gratitude of their fellow citizens. Their names are permanently recorded on a memorial plaque in the School Sports Hall in Rakovac. This monument not only bears witness to the fallen athletes but also serves as a constant reminder that freedom was not a gift but was earned through immense sacrifice.
Despite constant dangers, sports life in Karlovac did not die out. Clubs operated within wartime constraints, and many competitors achieved impressive results on the domestic and international stage. Baseball players, handball players, taekwondo practitioners, and rowers from Karlovac carried Croatia's name around the world precisely when the country was fighting for international recognition. Every appearance under the Croatian flag was more than a sporting achievement-it was proof that Croatia existed, fought, and had no intention of giving up.
In early August 1995, Operation Storm brought the final liberation of occupied territories and the long-awaited peace. It was a moment when athletes could fully dedicate themselves to what they do best. The reconstruction of halls, playing fields, and stadiums followed, along with the creation of new generations that continued to build the reputation of Karlovac sports.
Today, more than three decades later, children come to training without a care, play matches, row on rivers, and dream their sporting dreams. That peace has not always existed. Behind every training session and every match played today stand years of suffering and the sacrifice of those who fought for the right to a normal life. The freedom we live in did not come by itself-Karlovac athletes and sports workers paid the highest price for it.
Victory Day is therefore not just a national holiday and a remembrance of the triumph of the Croatian army and police. For Karlovac sports, it is also a day of deep gratitude to all those who did not live to see new matches and sporting anniversaries because they built their lives into the foundations of an independent Croatia. As long as children's laughter and the buzz of sports are heard on the playing fields of the city on eight riverbanks, the memory of those who gave their most precious gift for our freedom will live on.
