The police intervention came after residents of the village of Mystras, located next to the eponymous medieval fortified town near Sparta in the southern Peloponnese, expressed concern for the 90-year-old retired teacher. According to state broadcaster ERT, neighbors reported to authorities that the elderly man had shown no signs of life for an extended period.
During questioning, the suspect told police that his father had died of natural causes approximately two and a half years ago. He admitted to placing the body in a freezer at the family hotel. However, local residents claim they had not seen the retiree for at least four years. There are currently no immediate indications that the 90-year-old's death was due to anything other than natural causes, as reported by the media outlet Ekathimerini.
In an official police statement, the 55-year-old faces charges of fraud and making false statements. Additionally, he has been reported for violating weapons laws after an air rifle was found during a search of his premises. The deceased's body will undergo an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
