On Monday, August 3, 2026, Karlovac County Prefect Martina Furdek-Hajdin issued a decision banning open fires in all outdoor areas within the county. The ban takes effect immediately and will remain in place until September 30, 2026, as confirmed by the County for Kaportal.
The decision was made in response to the extreme weather conditions affecting the entire Karlovac County area. The County explained that this is "a preventive measure aimed at reducing the risk of outdoor fires starting and spreading."
The ban covers a wide range of locations: open fires are not permitted on agricultural land, protected natural areas, forests and forest land, as well as land in the immediate vicinity of forests. Additionally, the ban applies to land where public and commercial buildings are located, waste disposal sites, city parks, household plots, and all other open spaces.
Despite the comprehensive ban, the County emphasized that the decision does not apply to fires in standard fireplaces built for food preparation. In other words, residents can still use barbecue grills, but they must take preventive protective measures. "This decision does not apply to fires in standard fireplaces built for food preparation, provided that preventive protective measures are taken," reads the County's statement as reported by Kaportal.
This sends a clear message to residents to take the fire risk seriously while also acknowledging the everyday need for outdoor cooking during the summer months.
