Filip Hrgović, born on June 4, 1992, in Zagreb, has been the brightest star of Croatian boxing for decades. His journey from amateur champion to professional contender for the world title has been marked by spectacular knockouts, but also by political games that cost him a shot at the belt. After the first professional defeat of his career, the key question is whether the 32-year-old boxer can return to the top of the heavyweight division.
Hrgović confirmed his talent early in the amateur ring. In 2015, he won a gold medal at the European Games and a bronze at the World Championships, signaling great things to come. The pinnacle of his amateur career came at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where he won a silver medal, the greatest achievement in Croatian boxing in recent history. That year, he also turned professional, signing with Eddie Hearn's powerful promotional company, Matchroom Boxing.
In the professional ring, Hrgović quickly built a reputation as a fearsome puncher. Of his 18 professional fights, 14 ended in knockouts, demonstrating the power and aggression that led many to compare him to Mike Tyson. Training at the "Lavovics" club in Zagreb under the watchful eye of coach Leonardo Petrović, he established himself as the IBF's mandatory challenger for the world title. However, the opportunity to fight for the belt long eluded him due to politics within boxing organizations, which caused frustration and criticism regarding the selection of opponents in his career.
His streak of 17 victories was broken in August 2024, when he suffered his first professional loss to China's Zhilei Zhang in Saudi Arabia. That blow halted his march to the top and opened a period of uncertainty. Hrgović, however, quickly announced his return to the ring with a clear goal, to once again earn the status of IBF mandatory challenger and finally win the world title. His popularity in Croatia remains unquestionable, and the only question is whether he can come back stronger and wiser after this setback on his path to the top of the world.
