The extreme heatwave that has gripped parts of Europe shows no signs of abating. While Austria recorded its highest temperature ever of 41°C on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute (RHMZ) has issued an urgent warning for Serbia, forecasting a prolonged period of unbearable heat with only a brief respite in mid-month.
Peak of the Heatwave Until August 8
According to the latest RHMZ forecasts, the heatwave will be most intense from August 5 to 8, 2026. In most places in Serbia, maximum daily temperatures are expected to reach around 40 degrees. What is particularly concerning is that even the nights will not bring relief. Tropical nights are expected in Vojvodina and Belgrade, meaning temperatures will not drop below 20 degrees.
A similar situation is unfolding in Austria, where, according to Anadolu Agency reports, meteorologists expect the peak of the heatwave to occur on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the possibility that temperatures on Wednesday could exceed the record high.
Brief Respite from August 8 to 13, Then a New Temperature Shock
From August 8 to 13, 2026, the intensity of the heat will slightly weaken. During this period, Serbia is expected to see daily highs of a more bearable 30 to 35 degrees. However, RHMZ warns that this does not signal the end of the heatwave. After August 13, a sudden rise in temperatures is expected again, with the continuation of extreme heat, confirming that the end of this summer inferno is not yet in sight.
Red Alert for Public Health
The prolonged period of very high temperatures leads to an accumulation of heat stress, significantly increasing health risks. The greatest dangers are heatstroke, sunstroke, and dehydration. The most vulnerable groups are children and the elderly, chronic patients, and pregnant women, as well as people who work or spend time outdoors.
Experts recommend avoiding direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., when temperatures and UV radiation are at their highest. They also advise regular intake of large amounts of water and staying in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. In densely built urban areas, the heat load will be further exacerbated by the warming of asphalt, concrete, and other artificial surfaces.
