When it's time to replace tires, many drivers opt to buy only two new ones for financial reasons. The prevailing opinion, especially among owners of front-wheel-drive cars, is that new tires should be installed on the front. The logic seems indisputable: the front wheels steer, transmit engine power, and bear the greatest load during braking.
However, expert recommendations are quite the opposite and are based on safety, not on the vehicle's drive characteristics. If you decide to buy only two new tires, they should definitely go on the rear axle.
The main reason for this recommendation is not the drive, but the vehicle's stability, especially when driving on wet and slippery roads. New tires have deeper tread, which means they evacuate water better and provide safer grip than partially worn ones. When such tires are placed on the rear, the likelihood of the vehicle's rear end losing contact with the road and starting to slide uncontrollably is dramatically reduced.
Loss of grip on the rear axle can lead to oversteer or even spinning the vehicle, especially in a corner, during sudden direction changes, or while driving in the rain. Such a situation occurs suddenly and is often very difficult for the average driver to correct with proper steering input.
Drivers' insistence on having better tires on the front axle may improve traction, but it simultaneously creates a significant difference in grip between the two axles. If the front tires hold the road well while the more worn rear tires lose grip, the car can suddenly oversteer. Therefore, priority is always given to the stability of the rear axle, regardless of whether the vehicle is front- or rear-wheel drive.
When the more worn tires are on the front, the car will start to "push" wide in corners on slippery roads. The driver will usually feel earlier that the front end is responding less and can reduce speed. On the other hand, oversteer is usually more abrupt and requires a quicker and more precise reaction that most drivers are not prepared for.
Replacing only two tires is acceptable only if the remaining pair is still in good condition, of appropriate dimensions, and compatible with the new ones. However, the safest solution is to replace all four tires at the same time. When all four tires are the same model and have approximately equal tread depth, the car behaves more consistently during braking, cornering, and sudden direction changes.
Special caution is needed for all-wheel-drive vehicles. A greater difference in wear, dimensions, or circumference of the tires can put additional strain on the drive system. Therefore, before replacement, it is always best to check the vehicle manufacturer's instructions or consult a tire specialist. Also, replacing only one tire is recommended only when the new tire matches the remaining tire on the same axle as closely as possible in terms of model, dimensions, load capacity, speed index, and tread depth.
