The wider Rijeka area is entering the most severe drought period in recent history, and the municipal water company KD Vodovod i kanalizacija Rijeka is appealing for voluntary conservation to avoid restrictions.
On August 6, 2026, KD Vodovod i kanalizacija Rijeka issued an urgent appeal to residents, businesses, and institutions across the wider Rijeka area: reduce daily water consumption by 10 to 15 percent. The system is under serious and growing strain. Although water supply is currently stable and the water is safe for consumption, hydrological indicators demand increased caution.
The prolonged absence of rainfall has reduced the yield of water sources. The utility therefore insists on preventive conservation-simple changes to daily routines that do not compromise living standards but can significantly relieve the system.
Residents are advised to take a series of concrete measures. Shorter showers instead of baths, turning off the tap while brushing teeth and shaving, and using washing machines and dishwashers only when full. Regular checks of household plumbing are also urged to prevent leaks. Washing cars, terraces, and driveways with drinking water should be postponed-as should watering lawns and filling or topping up swimming pools.
Businesses are called upon to immediately inspect their plumbing and repair any leaks, improve processes that consume large amounts of water, and, where feasible, introduce water reuse systems. Tourist facilities have received special guidelines: inform guests about the drought, reduce watering of green areas, and use outdoor showers and taps carefully.
There are currently no official restrictions. Everyone is asked to voluntarily conserve so that supplies last through the end of summer. Such preventive conservation can avoid the introduction of stricter rules if poor hydrological conditions persist. Water use restrictions, in accordance with the Water Act, can only be imposed when available quantities no longer guarantee a secure supply.
If necessary, the decision will be made by the competent institutions based on expert assessments and proposals from the public water utility. The Primorje-Gorski Kotar County also appeals to all residents, companies, and organizations to help preserve this resource through responsible and moderate use. KD Vodovod i kanalizacija Rijeka will continue to regularly monitor water sources and will promptly inform the county, local authorities, and the public of any significant changes.
