After a French citizen injured two police officers with his car on Vir in the night of August 3-4, the SPH says: 'Immediate expulsion and a five-year entry ban!'
The urgent deportation of all foreign nationals who attack Croatian police officers has been demanded, and the Croatian Police Union (SPH) also insists on a mandatory re-entry ban of at least five years. They made this stance known immediately after the incident on the island of Vir, where two police officers were injured during a routine traffic check in the night of August 3-4, 2026.
The Municipal State Attorney's Office in Zadar reported that a vehicle driven by a 30-year-old French citizen was stopped, and the driver was ordered to get out. He refused, and when officers attempted to apprehend him, he actively resisted and suddenly accelerated the car. The vehicle dragged the two officers several meters before running over their feet.
The officers sustained minor injuries, while the suspect was arrested. After questioning, the competent attorney's office proposed that the County Court in Zadar order pretrial detention.
In a statement released on August 4, 2026, the SPH calls for far stricter penalties for foreigners who assault officials. In addition to imposing hefty fines and the act of expulsion itself, the union's key demand is a five-year ban on re-entering Croatia.
"Immediate expulsion and a five-year entry ban!" the SPH told Dalmacija News.
In their statement, as reported by Jutarnji list, they further emphasize:
"Deport them from Croatia."They believe such a measure would eliminate the need to spend public money on pretrial detention and rehabilitation programs for foreign offenders, and they stress that there must be absolute intolerance toward attacks on police.
The Croatian Police Union strongly condemned the incident, calling it an unacceptable act that constitutes not only an assault on police officers but also on the dignity of the entire state. In their statement, they say it is absolutely unacceptable for any foreign national to attack Croatian police officers, who are responsible for protecting the safety of all citizens on a daily basis.
